You could say that Chas and Dave will be doing their own support! To mark the 30th anniversary of the first Christmas Jamboree Bag album, Chaz and Dave will be playing the medley live for the first time ever. This medley was very high up the list of most requested songs when Chas & Dave ran a special setlist vote prior to their farewell final tour.

Being a Christmas medley, unfortunately it wasn’t practical for them to play it on the tour, but now it is!

Chas And Dave: Christmas Jamboree Bag Album Songs

Stars Over 45 | Rabbit | The laughing Policeman | Somebody Stole My Gal | Fall In & Follow Me | Are Your From Dixie? | Margie | Where Did You Get That Hat? | Who Were You Will Last Night? | Swanee | The Sideboard Song | Baby Face | … and many more

Chas and Dave: Idiot Abroad 2 Cameo

It’s been successfully kept it under wraps for five months, but Chas & Dave went into the studio with Ricky Gervais and Stepgen Merchant’s pal Karl Pilkington to record a brand new version of Aint No Pleasing You for the last ever episode of Sky TV’s Comedy-Reality show, An Idiot Abroad. It was a something of a ‘Jim’ll Fix It’ moment for the hapless Karl and, being huge fans of Carl, Ricky, Steve and the whole Idiot Abroad programme themselves, Chaz & Dave were very pleased to grant him such a brilliant request. The episode first aired on Sky One on Monday November 14th at 10pm, but is often repeated on Sky One and on Sky Two.

Chas Hodges: Biography

Chas Hodges was born Charles Nicholas Hodges, on 28 December, 1943) in North Middlesex Hospital, Edmonton, in north London. His mother was Daisy, his father a lorry driver from Hackney called Albert Hodges and he had an older brother – oddly enough called Dave. Chas is best known for being lead vocalist and piano-player in Chas & Dave.

Chas’s father, Albert, killed himself with a 12-bore shotgun the day before Chas’s fourth birthday. Daisy managed to feed the children by playing the piano in pubs and clubs all around North London. At the age of twelve, his mother encouraged Chas to learn the guitar. In 1957, barely a year later, Chas joined his first band, who were called The Horseshoe skiffle group.

Chas’s first “proper” job was at a jeweller’s shop on Edmonton Green called Turner’s: he got the job because the boss drank at a pub where Chas’s mother played piano. But Chas was soon earning more money as a musician.

After the Horsehoes broke up, Chas was asked to join Billy Gray and the Stormers, who played regularly at the King’s Head in Edmonton. Chas played bass guitar: he was the only musician in Edmonton with a bass guitar and amp, which had belonged to Jet Harris, bassist with The Shadows.

Chas left the jeweller’s and, after a short stint working in a deckchair factory, became a professional musician with Mike Berry & The Outlaws, (with guitarist Richie Blackmore, who went on the play with Deep Purple), who recorded with legendary independent producer Joe Meek. The Outlaws split from Mike Berry and backed several musicians including Jerry Lee Lewis, Heinz and Gene Vincent, before Chas left to join Cliff Bennett & the Rebel Rousers, which had Mick Burt (later to become the Chas and Dave drummer) on drums.

Meanwhile: in 1961 Chas met his future wife, Joan, at a gig in Edmonton, and they became engaged two years later. In 1965, out of 1,000 other girls, Joan was chosen to be the first of six original UK Playboy Bunny Girls and she was sent out to Chicago to learn the ropes in the Chicago Playboy Club. Joan came back to London in 1966 to audition and train British girls to open the UK’s first and only Playboy Club in London’s prestigious and very exclusive Park Lane. Whilst she worked at the Playboy Club, Frank Sinatra asked Joan to appear in his 1966 film The Naked Runner.

Joan and Chas married in the October of 1966 and they now have three children: Juliet, Kate (a singer/songwriter) and Nik who is a musician and a film and television soundtrack composer. Chas and Joan have a grandson called Harry and a granddaughter called Charlie.

In 1970 Chas’s friend and much admired British guitarist Albert Lee formed Heads, Hands & Feet and Chas was asked to join them. He spent the next two years gigging and recording with HH&F. On a long tour of America, Chas began to experiment with writing his own songs and thought about the idea of playing and singing about his own area of the world – London – in his own accent, just as Americans have always been able to do. He said he felt a fraud singing in an American accent in the USA. His friend Dave Peacock shared these views and so Chas and Dave were born at the end of 1972.

Chas and Dave recorded their very first album in 1974, with Mick Burt, the drummer from Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers, joining them very soon after. After a couple of well received albums they finally broke big in 1979 with “Gertcha”, their first top 20 hit.

In 1980, Chas produced the single “Sunshine of your Smile” for Mike Berry: it was a top 10 hit and became a live favourite with Chas and Dave. Mike and Chas then worked together on an album of the same name.

In 1983, at Eric Clapton’s wedding Chas was on stage playing some rock ’n’ roll on the piano and was joined by Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. Ringo’s wife, Maureen took pictures but was later told to keep them to herself. They have never seen the light of day.

Chas recently published his second book, Chas & Dave: All About Us (John Blake Publishing), as well as a textbook on growing your own vegetables called Chas’s Rock’n’Roll Allotment. His first solo album appeared in April 2009. Aside from a cameo from his granddaughter on alto-sax, all the songs are written, performed and produced by Chas Hodges.

Chas Hodges and Dave Peacock reunited for the final Chas and Dave Tour, which took place in 2011.

Dave Peacock (or to give him his full name, David Victor Peacock) was born in north London on May 24, 1945. He is a British bass-player and musician, best known for being one half of the duo Chas and Dave (or Chas n Dave, as they are known).

Dave Peacock was raised both in Ponders End and Freezywater areas of Enfield in North London. One of four kids, his father worked in the rolling mills and he learned to play the banjo and ukulele at the age of five. His grandparents were Romany gypsies, and he taught himself to speak the language. His mother died when he was 13.

Dave’s first band was called The Rolling Stones (not that one!), which he joined in 1960, before moving on to play with The Tumbleweeds, Jerry Donaghue, Mick Greenwood and finally Black Claw, which also featured Albert Lee and Chas Hodges.

Dave Peacock and Chas Hodges first met in their early twenties when Chas was hitching a ride back from his girlfriend (now wife) Joan’s house and Dave picked him up. As Dave told Suzie Rushton in 2007: ‘“I went round Chas’s house and he had all the records I liked,” Dave says. “Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, all that Fifties rock’n’roll”’
Although Dave Peacock played bass in Chas and Dave, both he and Chas Hodges were interchangeable bass-players and guitarists. When they met, Chas was the bass player in a band called The Outlaws.

Dave and Chas started going to parties together. and they became immersed in traditional London songs and tradituons Chas had an aunt who had a pub in Essex and his uncle was a singer in the manner of 19th century Cockney Music Hall star Harry Champion, whose best-known songs include ‘Any Old Iron’ and ‘I’m Henery The Eighth, I Am’. Dave’s sister used to have musical parties and family singalongs at her house.

When Dave Peacock started writing with Chas Hodges in 1972, they decided to write and sing in their own accents, not in the American drawls that everyone else seemed to be doing at the time. From the early days, they built up a following by playing in pubs throughout the UK, travelling around in a Mini.

In 1974, Dave Peacock and Chas Hodges officially formed Chas and Dave, together with drummer Mick Birt. Their first album (a year later) together was co-produced by Dave and Chas Hodges and was called “One Fing ‘n’ Anuvver”.

Their big break came two years later when Dave was playing with Chas in a pub in north London and they were approached by an advertising executive, who was looking for someone to appear in a series of ads for Courage beers. Chas and Dave were an overnight success, with the song in question, ‘Gertcha’ becoming their first Top 20 hit.

After being approached by London promoter Jim Driver to appear on the Acoustic Stage, Chas & Dave appeared at the 2005 Glastonbury Festival. The year ended on a high with a totally sold out Christmas Beano at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire (promoted by Jim Driver), that was filmed by EMI for release as a DVD.

Dave Peacock gave up writing new material in 2005 in order to spend more spare time on his 20-acre estate in Hertfordshire, looking after his three horses and pursuing his hobby, “lining out”, or painting, gypsy caravans. “I did a trade class trolley at the Windsor show and the Queen herself admired my paintwork,” he told the Independent.

In 2009 tragedy struck Dave Peacock, when his wife Sue, passed away after cintracting lung cancer. Dave decided to retire from music.

A statement issued on the duo’s website at the time said: “It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of Sue Peacock – Dave’s wife of 36 years – on July 4th after a brave battle with lung cancer.

“Despite being a lifelong non-smoker, she was diagnosed with the disease at an advanced stage last November.

“Loved by anyone who was lucky enough to know her, she never had a negative point of view on anyone or anything even as it became clear she was losing her fight for life.”

In 2011, Chas & Dave reformed for a final UK tour, culminating in sold out performances at London’s O2 Indigo venue. Dave Peacock has no plans to do any music outside Chas and Dave.

Chas and Dave are part of a tradition of British music that had its roots in the Music Hall, through the songs of Charles Penrose and Stanley Holloway, through fellow Londoners The Kinks, the Small Faces, Ian Dury and the Blockheads and Squeeze. Their songs tend to be about London life, and are often funny, sometimes sad. Their inspiration came from Rock ‘n’ Roll and from Music Hall.

Chas Hodges and Dave Peacock were a part of the UK rock scene of the 1960s and early 1970s, before teaming up with drummer Mick Burt to form the group Chas and Dave. Chas had appeared on stage with Jerry Lee Lewis, Mike Berry & The Outlaws and Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers (which also included Burt on drums) and had recorded with legendary “home producer” Joe Meek. Chas then joined Albert Lee’s acclaimed Country-tinged rock band Heads Hands and Feet before joining up with Dave Peacock and Albert in a band called Black Claw.

Dave had started out with The Rolling Stones (no, another band called the Rolling Stones!) in 1960, before appearing with The Tumbleweeds, Jerry Donaghue, Mick Greenwood and Black Claw.

The debut Chas and Dave album “One Fing ‘n’ Anuvver” was released in 1975 on the Retreat label. The boys produced it themselves and the album was consciously “Rockney” (London-centric and sung in their normal voices), containing song such as ‘Ponders End Allotments Club’. Indeed the next album, recorded in 1978 for EMI was entitled “Rockney” and it featured Chas and Dave in all their proud cockney glory, showing off their good natured good humour to great effect.

Two years later Chas and Dave were playing their song ‘Gertcha’ in a pub when they were spotted by an advertising executive. He signed them up to make commercials for Courage beer and almost overnight Chas and Dave were an overnight success, with ‘Gertcha’ becoming their first Top Twenty chart hit. It was followed by ‘The Sideboard Song (Got my Beer in The Sideboard Here)’ from their 3rd album “Don’t Give A Monkey’s” , and their two best-selling singles of all time: 1980’s ‘Rabbit’ (from the Don’t Give A Monkey’s” album) and the reflective ballad ‘Ain’t No Pleasing You’, which came two years later. In between they recorded the first of many live Chas and Dave albums, “Live At Abbey Road”, with the famous Studio One (in Abbey Road!) converted into a North London style pub for the occasion, populated with friends and music industry stars and bigwigs.

Their next hits were ‘Margate’ and ‘London Girls’ and in 1986, a collaboration with the Matchroom Mob on ‘Snooker Loopy’, and with Tottenham Hotspur FC on their official FA Cup Final songs.

The 1980s brought some classic Chas & Dave Christmas releases with collections of their favourite old time songs brought back for a new audience. The boys still found time to make TV appearances on the likes of Crackerjack and writing the theme tune to the Alf Garnet sitcom, In Sickness and In Health. In 1985 Eamonn Andrews presented Chas and Dave with the famous “red book” on the TV show This Is Your Life.

The 1990s brought increased success, major theatre tours and gave the British public a love of Chas and Dave that has never waned. And their appeal is high with young people. When The Libertines were asked who they wanted to appear with them in 2003/2004, they immediately chose Chas and Dave. The Brixton Academy and The Kentish Town Forum shows were a huge success and served to bring Chas & Dave to many people’s attention.

In 2005 Chas & Dave made their triumphant debut at the Glastonbury Festival and they joined forces with EMI once more resulting in two top selling CDs. The year ended on a high with a totally sold out Christmas Beano at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire , that was filmed by EMI for release as a DVD.
Then tragedy struck. In 2009, Dave Peacock’s wife Sue, a driving force behind Chas & Dave’s career, died after a brave battle with lung cancer and Dave decided to retire from music. Chas Hodges continues to keep ‘Rockney on the road’ with his own band which play a full set of Chas and Dave classics plus a selection of Chas’s solo material.

In 2011, Chas & Dave reformed for one final tour and the year was topped off with sold out shows at London’s O2 Indigo venue.
